"It is incredibly important to me that one of the most diverse cities in the country, which is our city, really make everyone feel welcome here. I don't know why that threatens people so much," Deegan said.Last year, Deegan took matters into her own hands, shifting funds within her office's budget to create the Chief of Diversity and Inclusion position after the Council refused to fund it. She appointed Dr. Parvez Ahmed to the role, and under his leadership, the city has seen several notable achievements, including the unification of dueling annual MLK breakfasts, the hiring of the city's first Hispanic outreach coordinator, and the establishment of the city's African American and LGBTQ+ advisory boards.

A Potential Legal Battle Looms

Councilmember Diamond has made it clear that he is not done with his efforts to curb the city's DEI initiatives. He has stated that he plans to introduce an amendment next week that would completely prohibit the city from spending any money on these programs.
