Transforming Waste into Nourishment: Petrocco Farms' Partnership with the Food Bank of the Rockies

In the bustling fields of Petrocco Farms in Brighton, Colorado, the sweet corn harvest is winding down, but the impact of this family-owned operation extends far beyond the local grocery shelves. Through a unique partnership with the Food Bank of the Rockies, Petrocco Farms is ensuring that their "ugly" but perfectly edible produce finds its way to those in need, reducing food waste and nourishing the community.

Bridging the Gap: Petrocco Farms and the Food Bank of the Rockies Collaborate to Combat Hunger

Harvesting More than Just Corn

At Petrocco Farms, the sweet corn harvest is a well-choreographed dance, with workers and machines moving in sync to gather the season's final bounty. But amidst the flurry of activity, Joe Petrocco, the vice president of the farm, recognizes that not every ear of corn will make the cut for grocery store shelves. Instead of tilling these "imperfect" ears back into the soil, Petrocco Farms has found a better solution – partnering with the Food Bank of the Rockies to ensure that this nutritious produce reaches those in need.

A Win-Win Relationship

The partnership between Petrocco Farms and the Food Bank of the Rockies is a true symbiosis. While the farm would traditionally have plowed under the less-than-perfect ears of corn, the food bank sees these as a valuable resource. "Most of that corn would be lost and basically wasted," Petrocco explains. "We would rather obviously have it go to a good resource, like the food bank, than have it just tilled back into the soil."For the Food Bank of the Rockies, this collaboration is a game-changer. Colleen Daszkiewicz, the purchasing manager, emphasizes the importance of fresh produce in the diets of the communities they serve. "A lot of our communities — fresh produce is a really big part of their food cultures," she says. "It's nice to be able to provide ingredients that can make a full meal rather than just a few items here and there that people then have to supplement with other items that they're buying."

Nourishing the Community, One Ear of Corn at a Time

The impact of this partnership extends far beyond the farm and the food bank. Last year, the Food Bank of the Rockies distributed over 27 million pounds of fresh produce, much of it sourced from local growers like Petrocco Farms. This influx of nutritious food has been a lifeline for families facing food insecurity, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the demand for fresh produce has soared. For Petrocco, the decision to partner with the Food Bank of the Rockies is more than just a business decision – it's a reflection of his values and a commitment to the community. "Whatever you do good for the public always, generally, will come back to you in a good way," he says. "It's kind of just a human thing."As the sweet corn season winds down, the legacy of Petrocco Farms' partnership with the Food Bank of the Rockies continues to grow, nourishing both the land and the people it serves. It's a testament to the power of collaboration and the transformative impact that can be achieved when businesses and nonprofits work together to address the pressing issue of hunger in our communities.
