Vogue Singapore: Pioneering Fashion in Southeast Asia's Future
During the height of the pandemic, Vogue Singapore came into being. The unique circumstances surrounding its launch played a significant role in shaping its identity, vision, and direction. Publisher Bettina von Schlipp recalls, "From day one, we were published on lockdown. We had to explore new ways to convey our stories." This led to the integration of tech and innovation into the team's storytelling and the readers' fashion experience. The future of fashion in Southeast Asia became a central focus.

Editorial Excellence and Innovation

Vogue Singapore's Editor-in-Chief, Desmond Lim, has consistently bridged the gap between fashion and technology. He introduced groundbreaking features such as Vogue's first NFT issue and collection, styling videos using AR technology, and NFC Continuity Chip embedments to unlock exclusive content. The publication has also welcomed AI models and left early footprints on the metaverse through an exclusive space on Spatial.io.Desmond emphasizes, "Guided by this ethos, we wanted to bring together the Vogue community to spark conversation on the future of fashion." In 2023, they launched the inaugural Next In Vogue, a multi-day landmark event that showcases the future of fashion, innovation, and culture. Its second edition was held at The Capitol Theatre and The Capitol Kempinski Hotel.

Southeast Asian Designers on the Global Stage

As editor-in-chief, Desmond's view on Southeast Asia as a collective creative force is clear. He writes in his editor's note, "It's not just about Singapore; it's about celebrating voices from across the region. We've been at major regional fashion weeks, supporting emerging designers."The Next in Vogue landmark event brought together industry leaders and a fashionable crowd of 1,200 from across the region. Desmond ponders, "I see Singapore as a center that unites the region, given our shared history and culture. By building community, we can discover and nurture new talent."

Red Carpet Couture by Southeast Asian Designers

Vogue Closet, an exhibition of red-carpet couture creations by Gaurav Gupta, Chet Lo, and Cong Tri, spotlighted Southeast Asian talents. Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and Adele have all worn these creations, highlighting the rising influence of Asian design on the global stage.Desmond explains, "This curated collection represents a significant shift in the global fashion landscape."

The Next Generation of Leading Designers

The Next In Vogue Gala showcased capsule collections by four outstanding Southeast Asian designers. Grace Ling fused fashion and technology with her 3D-printed collection. Brian Khoo reimagined blacks and whites with modern cuts and patterns. Phan Huy created garments like a sculptor, manipulating fabrics. Adeline Esther embodied stealth and sophistication with metallic fabrics.Desmond opines, "Fashion thrives at the intersection of culture and technology. Our vision embraces a creative community that celebrates heritage while pushing boundaries."During the event, guests also explored The Vogue Innovation Lounge, a playground and discovery platform dedicated to tech-driven fashion.

Tech Activations and Sustainability

Inside the Innovation Lounge, there were three tech activations. A hologram digital experience by the Digital Fashion Designers Council was introduced in Singapore. Nomtek and Showstudio demonstrated using the Apple VisionPro to tell fashion stories through augmented reality.COzTERRA, the winner of the 2023 Vogue Singapore X BMW Innovation Prize, impressed with its AI-driven materials that absorb carbon dioxide. A "carbon capturing dress" by Bryan Yeo was on display, showing that innovation can lead to beautiful garments while fighting climate change.

PAKT: Extending the Life of Fashion

This year's Vogue Innovation Prize went to Hong Kong-based PAKT, a digital wardrobe service. Founder Barbara Yu Larsson explains, "PAKT is transforming the wardrobe experience. We combine physical and digital to keep your wardrobe organized and sustainable."The Innovation Prize winner will receive support from the Vogue Foundation through specialized workshops and programs. Bettina says, "We foster environments for learning and collaboration to create a sustainable creative ecosystem."Everyone in the region is welcome to join the Vogue Singapore x BMW Innovation Prize. Open call for 2025 will be announced on Vogue Singapore's platforms.
