The research team, spearheaded by Robert Krencik, an associate professor at the Houston Methodist Research Institute, demonstrated that astrocytes engineered to produce interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), a potent anti-inflammatory protein, significantly reduced neuroinflammation. These capsules, roughly the size of large sand grains, proved functional upon brain implantation in both lab-grown human organoids and mouse models, demonstrating their resilience against the body's immune response and preventing unwanted cellular migration, thereby enhancing treatment stability and minimizing adverse effects.
